The Tempest - flail and picspam

I saw The Tempest at the Globe Theatre in London tonight. It rocked. :DD

Clearly a certain vocal portion of the audience were there to see Colin Morgan of Merlin fame as Ariel. He was genuinely unrecognisable in the role, which was great. He wasn't the most spritely of sprites - his cartwheeling leaves alot to be desired - but he made up for it with pathos and wings. The wings were temporary but brill, as was the eagle skull mask that he wore to terrify Antonio, Gonzalo et al. The show was really creative with the sprites in general and Ariel in particular, there were clawed stilts, and roof top entries, leaping from balconies, animal skeletons, gold-plated hairstyles, and just gorgeous movement and music.

Most of the rest of the audience were probably there to see Roger Allam from The Thick of It who did a very cool Prospero and really did well with the final speeches where he gives up his magic.

Everybody was blown out of the water by James Garnon though - as usual! ([personal profile] lilithilien will remember him as James I from when we saw Anne Boleyn). He played Caliban and his physicality continues to be a thing of awe. No one could have done the toe-licking, cringing, proud, obseqeous character more justice. He and Sam Cox as Stephano were completely hilarious. Sam Cox did drunken mincing delightedly, he made all his lines sound like they were written for an episode of Ab Fab. It was perfect.

The whole productions was gorgeous, there were lovely songs and funny dances with Ariel and Prospero keeping the frustrated Ferdinand and Miranda apart.

Miranda was played by Jessie Buckley who I recognised but didn't remember until the end was one of those Nancy/Dorothy/Maria girls back in the day but she's definitely come into her own now and managed to be both silly and stuborn, feral island child and proud duchess in waiting.

The production's just at the beginning of the run so if you're in London at all I highly recommend trying to catch the show, but if not, here: pictures!

p.s. James Garnon is genuinely awesome in all the things. *fangirls*

Eyes to make you melt! Dare I mention the mouth!
