Snowflake Challenge: day one

This is a bandwagon I'm happy to climb aboard. :D

Day 1

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator.

1. Fuck The Pain Away, and on AO3, Alles Was Zählt, Deniz Öztürk/Roman Wild.
I love this story a lot. Mostly because it made everybody cry. It was written during the most intense fan moment I have ever been a part of.

Alles Was Zählt for a lot of years was the little German soap that could. There were great characters and even though it was a soap and the producers and soap machinery was inexorably wearing away at the magic within, there was this last gasp of brilliance when the creators and directors and actors paid homage to some fantastic story-lines. We all laughed at the soapiness of Roman-has-an-inoperable-brain-tumour!plot. We all cried our hearts out, daily, for weeks, when that story started playing out on our screens, in little half-hour segments of digital-cruciatus. Fuck The Pain Away came out of that moment. It was a preparation, written before Roman's actual on-screen death, a way to accept what was coming, and a remembrance of things that had gone before.

I also kind of really like the style I wrote in, which is first person Deniz speaking to Roman even though he's gone, and the way it's an outpouring of Deniz's memories of one of their last nights together. I love that the fic knows it's audience so well, just as Deniz knew Roman, I knew who would be reading my story. It was probably only ever read by a maximum of 15 other people, all of whom where experiencing the same fannish-grief and who were all so completely steeped in canon-knowledge that the tiniest references and allusions to things in the fic flooded those readers with happy memories, turning them bittersweet in the process. The comments left on the fic were love and I still really like visiting them every now and again when I need a reminder of that time.

2. Diameter of the Bomb, Generation Kill Fanmix, Brad Colbert. It just turned out really well, the challenge theme was "quote" which gave me an excuse to use two of my favourite poems in relation to Brad and the whole exercise was a really nice way to think about his character.

3. Brothers in Arms, on LJ and AO3, Supernatural, Balthazar, Gabriel, Castiel, NC-17.
I set this story pre-series, in the time of Job, and so even though the characters are the ones familiar to Supernatural - and therefore, comparatively, fairly irreverent in their outlook, I tried to rewind time a bit and look at what they might have been like before running into the Winchesters and what might their relationships have looked like at an earlier point. So Gabriel is just at the beginning of doubting his place in Heaven - still mourning his brother Lucifer, Castiel is pretty focused but still more interested in the humans than the other angels, and Balthazar has a lot to learn about exploring outside the box - which happily Gabriel is on hand to help with.

Job's suffering worked well as a background for various reasons: I liked the appearance of Satan in the story, and the parallels of Job as the Righteous Man foreshadowing Dean so I could include a bit of Castiel being interested. I love the Balthazar & Castiel friendship of which we see almost nothing on the show and I wanted to explore a little bit how that started to fall apart. I would have loved to have seen Gabriel and Balthazar as a duo, egging each other on and being ridiculous, so there was a lot of wish-fulfilment in this fic.
Basically I just really enjoy angel-backstory and am fond of how this turned out. :D
