What a week!
Some many lovely things have been seen and done and read this week!
I've just said goodbye to
amyriadfthings and
4nn4 who came to stay with me this weekend. On Saturday we went for the double, thanks to some birthday theatre tokens, and saw Billy Elliot the musical followed by Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake. Even though I've seen both these shows before, the latter so many times I've lost count, there's something special about watching things with fellow fans. It was clear that Matthew Bourne had made some changes, tightening up the script and choreography of his most famous ballet, and I really think his attentions paid off. When I first saw it, over ten years ago, I was moved to tears but I also didn't really understand what it was that had moved me. Every time I see it, I get a little closer to understanding why it affects me so much. It is a fiercely psychological piece, an outward expression of inner turmoil: fear, aggression, desire, and bitter neglect all warring within the Prince's mind. Each time I watch it I recognise again how astonishingly beautiful and compelling and unearthly it really is. It's an uncompromising and breathtaking depiction of things that are hard to express to one's self in words. When the Prince wandered amongst the restless swans bowed down in the moonlight as the music soared I really felt like magic was being made on stage.
We also watched ALL THE THINGS (including the dvd version of swan lake and billy elliot the movie)! Particularly if they starred Anna Maxwell Martin, she is my favourite!
Death Comes To Pemberley! Didn't give a fig for the story when the casting was that good. Everyone was perfect. Especially AMM as Lizzie and her relationship with Matthew Rhys's Darcy was really well portrayed and I wanted to sink into the flashbacks as well as wallow around in this really interesting stage of their marriage being tested. Although, to be honest, there was still some really shady expectations of what a marriage should look like being bandied about, and that led to the resolution of Darcy and Lizzie's problems being a little unsatisfactory.
The Bletchley Circle! Inga and Susan are all caught up. Still shipping Millie/Susan harder than ever. I would love fic that was a little one sided with Millie always hoping for more. Also I still love Jean so much. What was she doing for SOE? What family does she have? What's her love life been like? Is there someone she goes home to who is not shocked at all to find she's been shot in the leg?
Started Inga on Hatufim. We mostly spent the time shouting at the cruelty and dickishness of the IDF interrogation "psychiatrist". That guy sucks. But Uri is the cutest & everyone is horrendous at social interaction. I really need to find a way to get hold of the 2nd season!
And finally, I also finished reading Mary Renault's The Charioteer! I loved it a lot. It was such a compelling read. It's the second Renault I've read and I enjoyed it even more than The Last of the Wine. I think because her observations and characterisations were so astute and so recognisable (sometimes painfully so) that I really felt like I was getting so much insight out of reading it. I'm also super excited to read some of the fic from this fandom as well.
Slightly expecting a bit of a come down back to the real world of work etc tomorrow but the buzz from sharing beloved things with friends should keep me going for now!
