TURN

24/11/14 21:40
amoama: (mrs fisher is interested)
Greetings!
I'm taking a break from my ongoing quest to conquer the many and evolving elements of the English legal system (otherwise known as the graduate diploma in law) to ask you this important question:

Has anyone been watching TURN? (I think you have to write it in capitals?)
It's the show with Jamie Bell about spies in the US war of independence. I watched it in order to enjoy Jamie Bell being on my screen and found lots to love and lots to question.

generally spoilery chat but nothing specific )

Some many lovely things have been seen and done and read this week!

I've just said goodbye to [insanejournal.com profile] amyriadfthings and [insanejournal.com profile] 4nn4 who came to stay with me this weekend. Swan Lake, Billy Elliot, The Charioteer, Hatufim, Bletchley Circle... )

GOOD THING 1) It was always going to happen but it still turns out that watching the West End version of Les Miserables with 8 other visiting fangirls is guaranteed to make you need all the fic. The singing was fantastic obvs, everyone's voices slapped me in the face with their power and feeling. We were all leaning on each other and sobbing, it was glorious. Marius was ridic! Grantaire was all handsy over his militant boyfriend and heartbreaking over Gavroche. I love the older, beer-bellied Grantaire! Also the same actor played the Bishop at the beginning which was kinda hilarious. I mostly cried for Javert and his life choices. All in all it was devastatingly better than the film. Also yay, fangirl reunion weekend, it was wicked fun.

Does anyone have any recs or know of any good rec lists I can/should devour? I'm happy to read book-based things too. *g*

because GOOD THING 2) I'm going on holiday on Saturday and need to download all the fics to read while lazing about in exotic Mediterranean locations. I'm going with the irreplaceable [personal profile] lilithilien who is visiting from Canada and who I've missed so much since she left the UK. I'm so happy to have her back, even just for a few weeks.

GOOD THING 3) FILM FESTIVALS! London Film Fest and UK Jewish Film Fest are both coming up and have a ton of excellent stuff going on. Am waiting till I get paid tomorrow but I have big circles around far more than I can afford anyway! All the big films are basically sold out at this point but I don't really care because that's the stuff that will get an ordinary release too down the line. I'm gutted about The National docu, Mistaken for Strangers, already being full though. :(

Also I just re-watched The L.A. Complex through again and it was still utterly fantastic in the best, most fucked-up kind of ways. *sigh* WHY YOU ALWAYS GET CANCELLED CANADIAN SHOWS?

Wishing you guys all good things as well!!!! *smooch*

Because of exhaustion and indecision I am not currently doing any of these things that I would like to be doing...

Watching more Southland, every time I walk past my local cop shop I think how much I miss Lydia!
Finishing Mad Men season 6
Watching more of The Hour
Reading more of all the following:
Batwoman Elegy
Y: The Last Man
The Unwritten
Sandman: Game of You
Vorkosigan Saga: Cyroburn - it's all I have left and I can't bring myself to read it!
Elisabeth Bear: Promethean Age
HIlary Mantel: A Place of Greater Safety - Have officially been reading this for over 2 years now!
The Good Wife s3 needs finishing so I can get back to writing Cary/Kalinda soul-bonded wolf-heat sex-buddies fic.
The Lagartha/Vera marooned on Lesbos WIP.
Morgana/Lydia hair porn fic
The Fool - Robin Hobb fanmix which I am probably going to finish soon otherwise it will go on forever, or at least until I've re-read all the Liveship books, because AMBER.
RE-READ THE LIVESHIP BOOKS BECAUSE AAAAAAAMBER.
About another 8 teen wolf fics that I keep losing momentum to finish.
Listening to the last few Night Vale episodes.

For some reason I feel like I can't start consuming Night Vale fandom until I've caught up on the show and it's killing me to wait but I'm not quite there, I've just passed episode 21 but ahhhhh.

I like to be multitasking when I listen, like walking or washing up or tidying, anything brainless. The tube is a tiny bit too loud for me to enjoy it properly when commuting because I know I miss bits and also the frequent snortgiggles that Night Vale results in is quite disturbing for other commuters, not that I really give a hoot.

Anyway if you are posting fic or recs of fic or art or anything at all Night Vale related I am bookmarking it so hard right now and I am gagging to get back and consume it all. I just for some reason HAVE to listen to it all first.

So I’ve been to my first fan convention! And I loved it A LOT.
amoama: (more tea?)
Hey so I'm looking for some advice...

I've been wanting to try out going to a fan-related con for a while, I always love reading other people's trip reports when they've gone to one and guess what? There's one in London this weekend: Nine Worlds

I've never heard of it but it looks pretty good, with loads of interesting panels and things going on so I'd like to go.

SO...
Anyone got any tips on going to cons? Any etiquette I should definitely be aware of? Any thoughts about going to cons on your own without knowing if you'll know people? Anyone going? How important is it that I catch up with Welcome to Night Vale before I get there?

Logistically I have a couple of queries about 1) definitely not being able to go until Saturday so missing the first night, and 2) I live in London - how key to the fun is it to stay in/near the convention?

Hope everyone's okay these days! Let me know your thoughts/experiences - I wanna be prepared!

So I posted this at the GK comm's themed rec post the other day but I thought I'd post it here too and because, after all, it's about some of my favourite Generation Kill things this year. What's not to shout about?!

l_s_d_me's follow up to her Count to Three fic This Isn't Over - everything in this verse is love and I was thrilled to have more. Also the fanmix by deedlit50 just creeps under the 2012 barrier and is the perfect companion to the whole fic.

green_grrl's awesomely thorough Brad/Nate rec list. I'd mostly stopped reading Brad/Nate for a while and this was a lovely way to catch up!

nightanddaze wrote Brad/Ray Rockstar!AU The Comeback Kid (Ain't Got Shit On Me) which was completely gorgeous and portrayed the pairings dynamic so well!

surexit's Brad/Ray manifesto because it's impossible to read it without flailing ridiculously. I direct you to points 3 and 4 in particular. ;)

looleebelle wrote me girl!Ray/Brad post-apocalypse fic A Vision of the Start and the End for the Boys of Summer exchange on we_pimpin. The whole exchange was glorious fun but obviously, considering this was written for me and it was EVERYTHING I EVER WANTED and stunningly written, this is my favourite. The two Hunger Games AUs were also unbeliveably beautiful and achey. sephirothflame wrote Walt/Ray and schlicky wrote Brad/Ray.

The Podfic challenge Semper Hi-Fi. OMG this was amazing. I didn't partake because I moved house like three times this summer but it was all glorious and so awesome to have so many more GK fics to listen to. My favourites were Baghdad ain't shit read by luzula, Falling Apart to Half the Time read by fandomfan and (I don't think they were part of the same challenge) but inkjunket read a couple of dsudis's Every Marine a Wolfbrother series and they're fab too!

There were some great fanmixes that I loved this year. Pointblankdarcy made Fall a Brad/Nate mix based on Carol Ann Duffy's poem You. It's ridiculously perfect. etacanis also did some paintastic Brad/Nate mixes but it's her Ray/Walt mix Presence which is making me fall apart on repeat at the moment.

I haven't even read half of the YAGKYAS entries yet but so far I've loved Your Shadow Weighs A Ton which is Bryan/Fick and Corporal Person: or, How Nate learned to stop worrying... which is such a great Nate/Ray story!

A Fannish History Meme as stolen from Petra.

Clearly, as I've been in fandom for approximately 18 months, this is not at all deep or interesting. But I'm doing this in the hopes that some of you will do it too so I'll get to hear about some of your experiences of fandom. :DDD PLEASE DO FOR ME!

A series of fannish firsts )

I recommend it even for people who usually avoid the pairing!

Random meme googling led me to this very strange way to review the year:

Take the first sentence you posted from every month and add the first photo you posted that same month...

(Taken from http://clasticdetritus.com which happily is a "blog about sedimentary geology".)

Don't think it quite works for blogs that are as frivalous as this one, but hey, let's review the shallow. :D

Still here.  )
