 It's been a while for me since I've posted and now I find myself with lots of things I want to say. Mostly, hope you're all well!! 


I went to Canada! 
Well, first to New York, which was wonderful, and the lovely riverlight entertained me a treat! It was lovely to finally meet such an already well-loved friend. And her sister. And her cat! I had such fun and that tapas restaurant OMG. My mouth is still watering over that one. 
Then I took the train to Montreal. Also glorious! It took 11 hours through the Adirondacks and I swear at times it was like we were travelling over the water (without the discomfort of being on a boat, lol). The scenery was sensation, so much forest, so much water. 
Montreal was nice, Ottawa was fun and relaxed and did great brunches. lilithilien and Diana and their two cats let me get on like a very spoilt member of the family and we did all the walking and all the museums. Lil and I went down to Toronto where the mojitos were divine and I learnt a LOT about ice hockey legends. We went out to Stratford and saw King Lear and got drenched in the rain down by the lake while still trying decide exactly which bridge Oliver's ashes were thrown off (before seeing Stephen Ouimette play the Fool in Lear anyway, lol). Lear was excellent! Lil and I mostly sided with Goneril and Regan and generally over-identified with the whole play and it was all wonderful. <3333 I'm ready to go back and do the whole thing again please. :D 

There were also two fic exchanges I participated in that posted while I was away. 

For Rarewomen I received a Bletchley Park Jean McBrien fic! I'm so delighted Arithanas decided to write Jean fic for me. In fact, all the AO3 Jean-centric fic is for me currently, which makes me sad and happy together. This story, The Golden Lion, is a tender piece that considers Jean's past in SOE and a relationship with a colleague under risky circumstances. It's beautiful and full of promise for more now the war is over. I loved it. 

And for renaultx I got two stories! Zeen wrote me Knock, breath, shine, and seek to mend which is post book Andrew and Ralph meeting and then Andrew visiting Laurie and it just inches achingly closer to something new and so interesting and poignant. Gah! <3

Then Lilliburlero wrote Souvenir which is Reg Barker POV thinking about his friendship with Laurie and it is ridiculously perfectly pitched. I got so lucky with these fics!!

I also wrote things, of course!

Awwww it was SO FUN having you here!

How was the Lear? So curious!

It was excellent! Colm Feore was awesome, he really nailed haughty king aiming for wisdom in his old age and tragically missing the point. I loved how the worse his grip on his sanity the more mobile he got, forgetting his age and tiredness in his distress. The only not great bit was when he did his huge speech in the storm and there was just too many effects to hear him well . I did love it visually though - there was so much smoke that he kept disappearing and his voice was completely coming from nothing and then there would be lightening and he would flash into being again. (they definitely engaged the sierra system, lol). His relationship with the Fool was perfect and I loved the physicality of it, they leaned on each other, they pulled each other along, and just acted like two beloved boys and two weary men who didn't really have to speak full sentences together.

The Cordelia was a bit blah but Regan and Goneril were fab all the way up until they both decided they loved Edmund. Silly!

The costumes were awesome and so was the staging; there was a great upper level and it just made the play so pacey, I didn't notice one moment of scene change it was seamless!

I really thought it was excellent. :D:D:D

I confess I've never read Lear, so I really ought to fix that! Shakespeare in the Park (NYC's free summer plays) are doing Lear this year, though, so maybe it's a good opportunity!

I'm so glad you thought it was excellent! Live theater can be so brilliant, can't it?
