So I’ve been to my first fan convention! And I loved it A LOT.
amoama: (more tea?)
Hey so I'm looking for some advice...

I've been wanting to try out going to a fan-related con for a while, I always love reading other people's trip reports when they've gone to one and guess what? There's one in London this weekend: Nine Worlds

I've never heard of it but it looks pretty good, with loads of interesting panels and things going on so I'd like to go.

SO...
Anyone got any tips on going to cons? Any etiquette I should definitely be aware of? Any thoughts about going to cons on your own without knowing if you'll know people? Anyone going? How important is it that I catch up with Welcome to Night Vale before I get there?

Logistically I have a couple of queries about 1) definitely not being able to go until Saturday so missing the first night, and 2) I live in London - how key to the fun is it to stay in/near the convention?

Hope everyone's okay these days! Let me know your thoughts/experiences - I wanna be prepared!

Some two years after the fact I'm posting a fic I wrote for Alles was Zählt - a couple of people did a rewatch and started chattering a little so I thought this was the time to get this fic off my mind and onto the internets.

Briefly, a summary, )

In response I wrote this fic, which I always wished I'd posted because I liked it and I liked the feel of it. Mostly, of these two survivors helping each other come to terms with the worst. But also, the idea that with Roman alive the two of them could never get on, would always be divided by their competition for Roman's affections; but without him there's room for them to have a different kind of relationship.

Title: The Unseen
Fandom: AWZ
Pairing: Deniz/Marc
Rating: NC-17
Word Count:3123
Summary:Roman is gone and Marc and Deniz try to find a way through the pain, anyway they can. Mostly they try sex.

Well this is some silliness. I've driven myself into a little frenzy of feelings about The Squad from The Lost Prince and have written fic about the two named members of it fighting in the first world war. Thanks so much to [personal profile] surexit for looking it over and smartening it up.

I got part of the title from The Weakerthans' song, Left and Leaving, which also has the lyrics:

I’m back with scars to show.

Back with the streets I know

Will never take me anywhere but here.

Not really relevant for the fic but still very Squad-feelsy, I feel!

Anyway, the fic is at AO3 or here:

This Review is sponsored by Surexit’s Lost Prince newsletter of incorrigibility.

I don’t know how I would have felt about the book if I hadn’t been extremely determined to enjoy it as my SOP is to be VERY SUSCEPTIBLE TO ENTHUSIASTIC RECCING. But I imagine I would have liked it anyway. I felt like I was reading some kind of brother book to The Little Princess which I liked a lot as a child.

Obviously this review could be summed up as RIDIC! BUT, ENJOYABLE!

But here, have some roughly assembled thoughts:

The Lamp Is Lighted )
amoama: (Default)

I'm at my mum's house, in the sunshine, quietly contemplating applying for new jobs. Nice, nice.

I finished Mirror Dance in the early hours of Saturday. I can't express how much I loved it. The series really paid back every moment invested in it with this one. I would never expect anything gratuitous from Bujold but considering how dark this one got, how painful, I still tensed for that sense of the writer getting carried away with the subject matter without true developmental purpose but that just never happened, every tight, torturous sentence served the characters and the purpose. I'm reeling with the integrity of an author flaying her characters open, testing them from so many angles, and still keeping it all bent to her strict storytelling purpose. Spoilery ) Hoorah!

I also finished David Grossman's Writing in the Dark this week which is one of the best collection of essays I've ever come across. Grossman's an extraordinary writer and to read his thoughts and approach to writing, rather than being formidable and leading me to question why I would write myself, is instead utterly motivating and affirming.

I've now seen Iron Man 3, Star Trek and The Great Gatsby! Cut again for not that spoilery thoughts )

I've done enough of these now to want to gather them up to admire and pet them all in one place!
I started making fanmixes a year ago thanks to the waywardmixes community. I've really enjoyed it as a way to think about stories and characters from different perspectives and to wallow in my feelings about things.

p.s. If at any point you're after something and the download has expired or broken or whathaveyou just comment and I'll fix it asap. <3

This has been doing the rounds lately. Nothing too illuminating to see here. I mostly seem to go for very short to the point first sentences - mostly starting with a name - which are probably supposed to be portentious. Perhaps it's good to be aware of this tendency for the future! This year is all about trying to be more considered about what/how I write. Which has led to me not writing anything much, but hey! Have a meme about things I wrote last year instead.
Perhaps bear in mind that some of these were comment fic *flails around for excuses*
Also this exercise requires me to own up to a couple of Remus/Sirius fics that came into existence as an outlet for my gross feelings about them which I hadn't previously been aware of so watch out for those.
21 is a serious portion of all my fic ever! )

Oh my gosh this meme cannot be resisted. (and I tried hard to, really).

What are you reading now?
I’m audiobook listening to Cotillion by Georgette Heyer. I’m fairly new to audiobooks and historically have found them quite hard to get into, the wrong reader can ruin a story for me, so I’m trying to be strategic about what I listen to. This is working really well at the moment though because I can close my eyes and listen all the way to work. I’m really enjoying the story, fairly often I’m giggling along as I listen. I’m loving all the cousins and Kitty’s earnestness and everyone’s general ineptitude. I’m rather fond of most of the characters. And all the “By gad, what a cad” talk. The bit about Kitty and Freddie hot footing around London with a guidebook that is rude about all the architecture had me in stitches and their decision not to visit the British Museum because a full third of it was dedicated to old books and another to manuscripts. It's all gold-dust really.

I’m also reading Fortress Malta by James Holland which has a nice approach of piecing together the events on Malta in WW2 from the anecdotes of islanders and military personnel. You get a bit about the person and what they were doing and then what they saw at that specific moment. I’m not too far in and it may get wearying as I go along but so far so good.

Finally I’m reading Zero at the Bone by Stacie Cassarino and being quietly blown away by her poetry. She does something so magically where she twists the poetic and the mundane together so they both mean something real. One of my favourites so far is In the Kitchen.

Except A Place of Greater Safety, Hilary Mantel, still going on that one. Could be a year or so in the making the way I keep reading everything else in the meantime. Even though it’s spectacular.

What did you just finish reading?
The Vor Game and Cetaganda by Lois McMaster Bujold. Both of these books really sold me on Miles, I had been missing Cordelia too much before these I think. I definitely preferred The Vor Game for all the devastating Aral and Miles father/son snippets but Cetaganda was also intriguing in the way it exposed so many of Miles insecurities differently to how the previous books had done. I’ve been meaning to read this series for a long time and I’m really enjoying it so far.

What are you reading next?
Thinking of returning to The Tawny Man series to read The Golden Fool by Robin Hobb for my next dose of Fitz/Fool drawn-out agony. I can’t decide whether to dive back into this series or press on with Miles and Labyrinth (I think that's next because I’ve already read Ethan of Athos). Also I keep starting Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein and then not getting very far so maybe that.

I'm still doing the fanmixing challenge over at [profile] waywardmixes and this month's theme was family. I promise you I was going to do a cheery Charmed sisters mix but the Farseer feels were too much for me to withstand. Apologies. More crappy art with dubious fancasting coming your way. XD

Fandom: Robin Hobb - The Farseer Trilogy
Subject: FitzChivalry Farseer, Verity Farseer, Burrich
Title: How Could I Say I Am Sorry?
Notes/Warnings: Spoilers for the Farseer Trilogy, all three books, but fairly vague I reckon. Actors cast for the art: Fitz - Cyril Descours, Chivalry - Richard Armitage, Burrich - Denis Menochet, Verity - Romain Duris. I went with the French and Bearded. Huzzah.

Title: Let Our Hearts Be Fearless
Notes/Warnings: I've used the translation by Stephen Mitchell which is all modern lingo and fleshed out interpretation of the myth. It also has a nice introduction at the beginning if you're into that kinda thing. Art by Franziska Leischker. It's the oldest story in the world so I imagine spoiler warnings are unnecessary but anyway, major character death abounds.

 I'm so behind again!

Day 6: Pimp three comms and why you love them.
I didn't do this one because I got way too distracted checking out everyone else's posts about this. It was a super interesting tour around the internet. I will probably unsubscribe from half the stuff I joined in about a week but it was still cool.

Day 7: Share something non-fannish about yourself.
Seriously, this was hard, literally everything I can think of ends up being fannish.
I hate to default to work chat but that's what I've got I guess. So, I work with asylum seekers normally but I just got back from three months in the West Bank. (I think LJ peeps might be aware, lol).
I have nice hair #allthatmatters but no fashion sense.
I wish I could fly planes.

Day 8: Talk about setting yourself a fandom goal.
This year I'd like to record a decent length, well-edited podfic. Reading stories aloud is such a pleasure, but making it so someone else could enjoy my reading is quite the challenge!

amoama: (Lucrythia)
Day Three: Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with and friend/follow them.

Weeeeeeeeeeeee! I've been thinking/meaning to friend [livejournal.com profile] pointblankdarcy   for ages and this totally gave me the impetus. :D I also commented on two fabulous fanmixes at [profile] waywardmixes made by people I hadn't interacted with before.

Day Four: In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts.

I'm finding this one difficult for some reason, idky. I guess the part afraid to ask for sums it up?

1? I always get anxious when asking for betas and more people in general to discuss writing-y things with would be lovely. Even the people I do have lovely chats with, I would always love to have more!

2? I would love recs for GK fanart - I don't have enough in my life I don't think.

3? I'm going to steal from other people:  [livejournal.com profile] sying  put in my mind the necessity of a Brad and Poke friendship story based around Poke being friends with Brad just to piss him off. I still would love to read that.

Day Five: Stretch yourself a little and try something new. Go play in a new fandom or with a new pairing. Try working in a new medium. Or consume different fanworks. Give that new fandom a go. Listen to a podfic or watch some vids if you haven’t before.

Ha. Well. I've got a new microphone and I've been trying to podfic some drabbles as practice but the results so far are fuzzy and cold-ridden! :C More practice required!

Also, a couple of people on my flist have recommended Rest and Be Thankful by Ione as a great Yuletide read and I don't know the fandoms but I plan to give it a read this evening anyway. :D
amoama: (cobrig)

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Drop a link to your post in the comments. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom and maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

This is a bandwagon I'm happy to climb aboard. :D

Day 1

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator.

Here we go!  )

amoama: (kocher siu)
So I posted this at the GK comm's themed rec post the other day but I thought I'd post it here too and because, after all, it's about some of my favourite Generation Kill things this year. What's not to shout about?!

l_s_d_me's follow up to her Count to Three fic This Isn't Over - everything in this verse is love and I was thrilled to have more. Also the fanmix by deedlit50 just creeps under the 2012 barrier and is the perfect companion to the whole fic.

green_grrl's awesomely thorough Brad/Nate rec list. I'd mostly stopped reading Brad/Nate for a while and this was a lovely way to catch up!

nightanddaze wrote Brad/Ray Rockstar!AU The Comeback Kid (Ain't Got Shit On Me) which was completely gorgeous and portrayed the pairings dynamic so well!

surexit's Brad/Ray manifesto because it's impossible to read it without flailing ridiculously. I direct you to points 3 and 4 in particular. ;)

looleebelle wrote me girl!Ray/Brad post-apocalypse fic A Vision of the Start and the End for the Boys of Summer exchange on we_pimpin. The whole exchange was glorious fun but obviously, considering this was written for me and it was EVERYTHING I EVER WANTED and stunningly written, this is my favourite. The two Hunger Games AUs were also unbeliveably beautiful and achey. sephirothflame wrote Walt/Ray and schlicky wrote Brad/Ray.

The Podfic challenge Semper Hi-Fi. OMG this was amazing. I didn't partake because I moved house like three times this summer but it was all glorious and so awesome to have so many more GK fics to listen to. My favourites were Baghdad ain't shit read by luzula, Falling Apart to Half the Time read by fandomfan and (I don't think they were part of the same challenge) but inkjunket read a couple of dsudis's Every Marine a Wolfbrother series and they're fab too!

There were some great fanmixes that I loved this year. Pointblankdarcy made Fall a Brad/Nate mix based on Carol Ann Duffy's poem You. It's ridiculously perfect. etacanis also did some paintastic Brad/Nate mixes but it's her Ray/Walt mix Presence which is making me fall apart on repeat at the moment.

I haven't even read half of the YAGKYAS entries yet but so far I've loved Your Shadow Weighs A Ton which is Bryan/Fick and Corporal Person: or, How Nate learned to stop worrying... which is such a great Nate/Ray story!

Title: Deep Shadows
Fandom: Les Misérables
Subject: Javert/Valjean
Notes/Warnings: For [profile] rehia_gessev at the [profile] waywardmixes holiday exchange - I really hope you like it! Warnings for wretchedness and suicide - nothing too heavy in the mix but it is canon.
Also I know there are a lot of words here - I'm sorry - but think of how long the book is! Limiting myself was so hard. I had to use a free download version of the book as I don't have access to any of my books right now so the translation is definitely not the best ever but the awesomeness of Victor Hugo still shines through. :D
Pictures are illustrations and covers from various editions of the book.
